(Updated July 7, 2004) I was captivated by this area in Northwestern Wyoming. We came across this area while on our way back from our showing at Horizon Fine Art Gallery in Jackson in 2003. As after many of our exhibitions in areas such as Wyoming, we were in search of wild habitit or animals to photograph for fresh reference. Here we found both. Just several yards along this stream were two bull moose, still in velvet, and a cow moose. After photographing them for a while, we followed the stream to this area where it flowed beautifully over several stones while reflecting the brilliant sky. I think this is a perfect hideaway for any human or creature.
(Updated July 7, 2004) We recently gathered references of these springtime scenes as many of the apple orchards are in full bloom in our area of Minnesota. This piece depicts two warblers among the blossoms. The original is 8" x 10". The painting was recently sold while the artist was finishing it at the Latham's "Spirit of the Wild" exhibition at Horizon Fine Art Gallery in Jackson. The piece will appear in an advertisement in Southwest Art Magazine for their next showing "Nature's Details" this August-September. Contact the artist for information about prints of this image.
(Updated July 7, 2004) This painting is 5x7. I particularly like the soft lighting and muted gray tones in the swan. I chose to use a dark background in this piece to complement the softness of the bird. The painting was recently featured in the Jackson Hole News and Guide to illustrate an article about the Lathams. The painting is sold. Contact the artist for information about prints of this image.
(Updated July 7, 2004) This snow leopard was very content to relax in this soft lighting when we studied him. I was drawn to the delicate tones reflected in the fur and the soft light patches. This is a very beautiful species of cat. This painting was started in the car on the road as we recently had to attend the Northeast Minnesota Book Awards Ceremony which meant a good deal of time away from the studio. I was able to start & sketch several paintings that day including the rabbit sketch (which can be seen in the "in progress" section of my studio).
(Updated July 7, 2004) When we studied this cat, she was taking care of her three little cubs. I was fascinated by her beautiful eyes and brilliant coat. I painted this indochinese tiger portrait painting for the British Society of Miniaturists exhibition in West Yorkshire, England. It and several other pieces I entered in the exhibition were judged best miniatures in the exhibition, of which I am truly honored.
(Updated June 10th, 2004) Some of my favorite subjects to paint are light passing through water and white feathers. There is such a breathtaking feeling of life and movement when I study them.
(Updated July 7, 2004) This painting was inspired from one of our photo shoots in the Florida Keys. Several of these beautiful snowy egrets were looking for lunch along the shore. The painting was recently shown in an exhibition in England.
(Added May 8th, 2004) We were very fortunate to study several mute swans as they bathed in the sunlight.
This painting will be released in print soon. Please contact for information about purchasing the original painting.
(Added May 8th, 2004) Blue and Gold macaws are beautiful birds. I enjoyed painting their brilliant coloured feathers as much as being able to observe their playful behaviour.
This painting will be released in print soon. Please contact for information about purchasing the original painting.
(Added May 8th, 2004)
This painting has been released in print. Please contact for information about purchasing the original painting.
(Added May 8th, 2004) This is another painting of a bathing mute swan from references gathered earlier this year. I enjoy the challenge of painting the movement of the swan ant water around it as well as the beautiful reflected colours.
This painting will be released in print soon. Please contact for information about purchasing the original painting.
(Added May 8th, 2004) This is my first elephant painting. I enjoyed painting it's rough skin compared to my normal fur or feathered subjects. I hope to paint more african themed pieces in the future. This painting has been sold. Prints are available.
(Added March 2nd, 2004)I recently completed several African themed miniature paintings for our recent show at the Minnesota chapter of the Safari Club International show.
(Added January 14th, 2004) This is Samantha from the Minnesota Raptor Center in St. Paul. Sam is a bit lighter (more white plumage) than most Great Horned Owls because she is native to the northern portion of North America. She was injured and cannot be released into the wild. The Center now uses Sam in a program to help educate the public about raptors. References for this painting were gathered several years ago when we were painting on location at Art Barbarians Gallery during a fundraiser for the Center. (A portrait of Sam was painted by Robert Bateman in the gallery and used to help the Center raise funds.)
All of the Lathams have painted a number of originals to help the MN Raptor Center as well as other wildlife organizations as they have recently had difficulty because of the West Nile virus.
(Added January 6th, 2004) This Red-Tailed Hawk painting was inspired from references taken at the Southern Wildlife Festival this past fall. The painting is 5x7 and is available for purchase.
(Added January 4th, 2004) I enjoy painting all raptors, but especially owls. This owl had particularly beautiful eyes and plumage. Reference for this barred owl was taken at the Southern Wildlife Festival this past fall. The painting is 5x7 and is available for purchase through Horizon Fine Art Gallery in Jackson, WY.
(Added January 4th, 2004) This painting "Red-Tailed Hawk Study" is a quick draw of one of the Carpenter Nature Center's resident birds. The piece is being used as a fundraiser for the nature center. Please contact them for more information <http://www.carpenternaturecenter.org>.
References for this piece were gathered during our recent show in Jackson Hole, WY. It was awarded second place in the "Fur" category at the Southern Wildlife Festival in Decatur, AL. The image will be reproduced as a gicl'ee canvas. The original may be purchased through Horizon Fine Art Gallery in Jackson, WY.
"A Quiet Moment - Mute Swan" was awarded the Tuck Stone Memorial Best of Show award and first place in the "feather" category. This image will be reproduced as a gicl'ee canvas. The original is sold.

This painting is being reproduced as a gicl'ee canvas. The original is available through Decoys & Wildlife gallery in Frenchtown, NJ.
I used feathers, wings, & a full fan as reference for painting the gobbler (courtesy of my friend Jake). The hens pictured in the background are local residents I was able to photograph this past fall. The background is a section of our backyard.
(Thanks to Jake, Adam, Greg, & Craig for their input & turkey critiques.)
Some collectors may have seen this piece in progress during our painting sessions at Art Barbarians gallery.
The original is sold. Limited edition prints are now available. Email for information.
