Joe Hautman speaking at the Federal Duck Stamp home state celebration in Owatonna, MN.
My family and I were invited to Joe Hautman’s home state celebration recently in Owatonna, MN for the 2008 Federal Duck Stamp - working with some of the organization committee with the art events and children’s area. Joe is working on a project with the University of Saint Thomas to create a Minnesota Wildlife Art Museum to highlight Minnesota artists and what they do to bring issues of conservation to light. In the past has helped restore wetlands in MN through conservation groups also.

I was asked to paint on location for the event, so I started a new piece the night before for the occasion…being that this event was held outdoors, I was a little concerned that the weather might not cooperate. So, to prevent possible damage from an unpredicted rain storm, or whatever else nature might bring, I chose to start a new painting instead of bringing an existing work-in-progress. (I actually, started blocking in the piece around 4am that morning… More sleep dep… :/ lol! ) The cougar I’m working on is 20×24. I will post a more complete image of the painting for you soon.
A number of representatives of the media came through the event, including Kent Herbeck Outdoors television, to film, shoot photos, and interview.

This is a new miniature painting of a pair of Trumpeter Swans ("On Golden Pond") in watercolors painted for the Seaside Art Gallery’s International Miniature Exhibition (their 17th annual) in Nags Head, North Carolina….one of 3 4×6 miniatures that I have in this year’s show.

"The Overseer - Cougar" & "Shattered Silence - American Bald Eagle" - both 4×6 watercolor miniatures that are also on exhibit at the Seaside show.
The exhibit just opened on the 5th and will run through the end of May. http://seasideart.com/

This is the progress on my cougar painting. The cat itself is about done, but the background has not been developed. I will have to find the habitat to put in the background and beneath the cat during one of my hikes around the area.

My family and I will be a part of the Jackson Fall Arts Festival - participating in our gallery’s events. We will be painting in the showroom on Friday & Saturday (possibly on Thursday evening as well) for their "Fall Roundup" exhibition. I will be painting this new cougar piece - this is the sketch for the painting. The painting is a larger miniature - it will be around 16×22 when it is finished.
Visit Galleries West’s website, www.gallerieswestjacksonhole.com, for the gallery hours and contact information.

I was in an accident a while back, some of my blog visitors may have heard, it was an incident with an overly playful cougar about a year ago. The event slowed me down a bit with my injuries and pulled muscles, but everything turned out fine (thankfully). …am very cautious around cougars now.
This is a painting in progress of the cougar that attacked me - the watercolor painting is 24×36.
