I am pleased to post that this painting, "Symphony of Light", watercolor on ivorine, was awarded a top honor at the Miniature Art Society of Florida’s 33rd annual exhibition - "Best Work by a Young Artist" (Best of Show for artists 35 or younger). This is the second time I have been given this award, which I am very honored for especially being that I am still a ‘20 something’.
It is quite an honor to have been given such high awards at both the MASF and MPSGS this year. Many thanks to both societies. As our elite miniature art exhibitions in the United States, each of them are surpassed by none. I greatly appreciate all that they do to preserve miniature art and it’s roots.
(Also, I want to post a congratulations to my sister, Bonnie, for her award of "Best Animal" at the CPA International Miniature Exhibition in PA with her beautiful Asian leopard portrait. I am very proud of her.

I just received notice that this painting, "Calm - Great Egret" (watercolor on Ivorine), was awarded ‘Second in Show’, the ‘Manny Sullivan Award for Excellence’, at the 74th Miniature Painters Sculptors & Gravers Exhibit of Washington, DC (the oldest miniature art society in America - http://www.mpsgs.org/). I am honored to have received this award for the second year in a row.
My watercolors "Polar Ambiance" and "Timberwolf" were chosen for first place in ‘Watermedia’ and first place in ‘Birds and Animals’ respectively. I am very honored to have my work chosen for these awards this year. Many thanks to the judge, Carol Lee Thompson, and those of the administration of the MPSGS.
The exhibit of 699 miniature works of art will run Nov. 19 - Dec. 29, 2007 at the Strathmore Mansion (in North Bethesda, MD). This year’s exhibition represents artists from 38 US states and 12 foreign countries.
My sister, Bonnie, was able to put a miniature painting in the exhibit this year also - her work was awarded as well.

My family and I went to the Birds in Art exhibit this past weekend in Wausau, Wisconsin - had a wonderful time.
My Mom’s painting "Fluff and Fold" was in the show. (…very proud of her.
) During much of the exhibit, the artists are asked to stay near where their artwork is hung in the galleries, but I did escape a little bit to roam the exhibition.
Carl Brenders, as many of my blog visitors already know, is one of the artists that I’ve had the opportunity to study with in the workshops I’ve taken in my training to be an artist. Of all of the instructors I’ve had, he has influenced my style and approach to painting the most. This weekend at the Birds in Art opening, Carl’s work was hanging just across from my Mom’s - so we chatted a bit with him during part of the events. He went through his new book for us, page by page, discussing his pieces that are published in it in depth.
I have said this before, but I have had so much encouragement and support from many wonderful people. I wouldn’t be the artist I am if they hadn’t taken the time. I can’t put into words how much they have helped me. :D

A quick note - ArtsWOM, a British blog for the arts sponsored by Sky Arts (Sky TV network), posted a very nice review of my artwork and blog as their "Showcase Pick" on June 4th - see it here. A big "thank you" to them!

This past weekend my family and I held our annual spring wildlife art show at the Saint Croix Carpenter Nature Center. Our art shows are held in the spring and late fall at the nature center’s Trailside Lodge or Visitor Center (this show was in the Visitor’s Center). This year the University of Minnesota’ Raptor Center held their spring raptor release at the nature center also - releasing a rehabilitated American bald eagle, a broadwing hawk, and two red-tail hawks back to the wild on Saturday.
These snapshots of our art show are during one of the quieter moments on Saturday. Thanks to everyone that dropped by to see us!!

(The artwork in the second photo are all original works - we had a number of larger originals on display this year as well.)
(This is my mobile studio at the show.

This is how my Snowy Egret painting is looking right now. The painting is very subtle and has a lot of very soft color tones in it - unfortunately the richness of the color in the habitat and some of the accents in the egret are not showing up well in this scan. When I did the research and study for this this painting, the egret had very soft lighting, so the look of the painting is a little different than most of the pieces that I paint. It is still in progress. Here’s the
sketch for this piece.

This is a new miniature painting I started not long ago. A snowy egret. I have been doing quite a bit of painting, but not enough posting here on the blog. One of my friends wanted to see this piece, so here it is…
