This is a little painting, only 4″x6″, of a duckling swimming. He and his sibling were following their mother across a small pond. I was really drawn to the beautiful water patterns and the energetic personality of the little bird. For the painting, I focused on rendering the softness of the downy feathers and subtle blue hues contrasting with the bold pattern of the water. My painting of a pair of Canada Geese on calm water tied for 5th place in the USFWS 2011 Federal Duck Stamp competition held at the David Brower Center in Berkley, California last week.
The painting will be a part of the National tour around the country in 2010-2011 with stops including the Easton Waterfowl Festival in Maryland, San Bernadino County Museum in California, Core Sound Waterfowl Museum on the North Carolina coast, and others. Please see the Events page for a complete list of venues (more being added shortly for 2011).
I have been involved in the Federal program since I was eligible and began entering the Junior Duck Stamp competition (for student artists) in 1996. In 1998, my work was chosen as the National runner-up which brought my family and I to Washington, DC for ceremonies and tours. Additionally, my sister’s work was chosen as the national winner in 2000 and various trips for events as well.
“Federal Duck Stamps are a vital tool for wetland conservation. Ninety-eight cents out of every dollar generated by the sales of Federal Duck Stamps goes directly to purchase or lease wetland habitat for protection in the National Wildlife Refuge System. Understandably, the Federal Duck Stamp Program has been called one of the most successful conservation programs ever initiated and is a highly effective way to conserve America’s natural resources.” Read more about the US Federal Duck Stamp Program on the Government website: http://www.fws.gov/duckstamps/

I recently finished a commission of a number of ducks (waterfowl). I really enjoyed painting these birds and the habitats.
The models for these paintings were simply beautiful, though the weather decided not to co-operate during our studies (in the rain). Each bird seemed to have it’s own personality, so a part of my goal in each piece was to capture the essence of each bird.

I visited the printer today to approve the final proof for the Ducks Unlimited Sponsor Print. I think it looks very nice – the colors reproduced well.
It is really exciting to see the finished (or near finished) product of your artwork being made like this. I am so happy to be able to do my part to help Ducks Unlimited the wildlife and wild places that mean so much to me .

I never posted the final image of my Canadian Goose painting, so here is the completed piece. The painting is now in the process of being printed in lithograph. I will add updates about that a bit later .

I have been painting on this piece (of a drake goldeneye duck) today. I like how all of the soft tones in the painting are coming along.
