Chipmunk Miniature Painting Progress

This is a long-overdue post about the progress of my little chipmunk painting. :D He's coming along pretty well. I'm bringing out all of the textures of the plants covering the ground and pebbles...and of course the fur. :D The chipmunk is just about life sized in the painting. The original post about him is here. The piece will be 6" x 8" when it is completed.

Beginnings - Otters Painted In Miniature

This is a painting that I was requested to paint of two otters.  This is the beginnings of the fur texture being put into place with many fine, delicate strokes.  (…this is actually one of my favorite parts of a painting - the very beginning and seeing all of the textures begin to develop.)  I love to bring out the finest details in the faces of the animals (or focal points of my floral pieces) with the lightest strokes. :D

In miniature painting, some artists use such fine strokes that they are only seen by magnifying glass, while others use more visible strokes in their pieces that are best not viewed under magnification and carry well from a distance, as observed by a Swiss miniature art expert.

Chipmunk Miniature Watercolor

This is a little miniature I'm working on as well. It's a chipmunk that I saw while I was out in Wyoming this fall. There were two of them that were scavenging around a park area. They were fairly used to being around humans, so they did come up fairly close - was very interesting to watch them. (My family had a hard time dragging me away from them... :? )

Little Bunny Miniature Progress…

Here is how my new little bunny miniature painting is going. :D Note that the colors here didn't turn out as well as they often do on my scans - for some reason it looks kind of heavy and seems to have taken the 'warm fuzzy' colors out of it. Hopefully the final one will be better. It is turning out to be quite a bit like the little bunny painting that I did last spring that was 8x10. I'm not completely happy with it yet, but it's getting there.

Squirrel Sketching - New Painting

The rough sketch for Rebecca Latham's new miniature Grey Squirrel watercolor painting.

I love paintings of squirrels, or at least the paintings that capture the playful personality of the animal.  So often the scene is filled with soft neutrals and rich earthtones — a very interesting to paint! :)  This is a small piece I am painting by request. Rebecca Latham | Wildlife Artist

Beaver Painting II

Rough beaver sketch for Rebecca Latham's new beaver commission.

This is a second sketch for my commissioned beaver painting.  I combined both of the sketches together for the painting - so there are two beavers in the painting.  I’ll be posting the actual painting a little later. Rebecca Latham | Wildlife Artist

Beaver Painting

Rough beaver sketch for Rebecca Latham's new commissioned beaver painting.

As I posted earlier, I have been primarily working on the stack of commissions I have in my studio right now.  This is one of the rough sketches for my beaver commission.  I have been painting on this piece for the last couple of days.

I really liked studying this animal.  He walked slowly, as you would expect a beaver to behave, but could also jump or run at any moment and be very energetic.   It made watching him almost comical. :)  With the beautiful fall colored leaves on the ground complementing him, I think the painting is going to turn out very well. New Year Studio Painting

I am working on a painting that has been sitting in my studio for a while - my rabbit painting.  I haven’t posted an image of the image of the piece here in my blog, but I believe it is listed in my online studio’s "Work in progress" section.  I will be posting a new image of the painting (here in the blog) in the next few days of so.  The painting is not for sale as it has been purchased in it’s in-progress state by one of my online visitors browsing the website.

New Squirrel Painting

Rebecca Latham's new grey squirrel painting for Impressions of New England art exhibition at the Bennington Center for the ArtsI just shipped this painting of a grey squirrel to an exhibition in New England.  The show will run through part of October at the Bennington Center for the Arts (www.benningtoncenterforthearts.org) as a part of their 6th annual "Impressions of New England" Exhibition.  This is the first year I’ve been a part of this show at the arts center.

I liked painting this subject, though I haven’t painted many squirrels in the past.  I like the fact that there are so many textures in the painting.  It made it very interesting to paint.
