This new 5×7 painting just left the easel.. Silver Gray – Timber Wolf, watercolor on board.
I have been fussing with this piece for some time… it’s been propped on various easels in my studio and my drafting table..looking at me..
When I get to a certain point in my work, I like to set the piece aside, for at least a day if not a week+ if I have the luxury, to see if there is anything that I can improve. This one, after a few months of that, convinced me that I was not at all satisfied with it. I grabbed a wet rag and wiped off at least 1/2 of the painting. …and started again.
This time, it is much better.

This is the progress on the little wolf puppy painting (9×12, watercolor on board). It should be finishing up soon.

Living in the land of 10,000 frozen lakes, I spend quite a bit of time painting in my studio in the winters. But lately, it seems to be especially gloomy. So, as I twittered earlier this week, I started on a new cheery, sunny painting of wolf puppies to brighten up my studio. (When the snow isn’t scheduled to melt for at least several months, we do what we can..
)
This is a detail scan of one of the wolf puppies in the new painting (sepia stage of painting). I loved the expression. I spent several hours with their litter – watching them run and play until they wore themselves out and were ready for naps. ..and I was lucky enough to hold one of them for a bit too. The puppy painting has just a little more to go before it’s completed… mostly grass-work left to do.
In addition to the spring puppies, I have a collection of spring flowers that should be fit to leave the easel very soon. So more to come!

This is one of my latest paintings – a 5×7 wolf portrait (watercolor on board, traditional miniature).
The new year is shaping up to be a very busy one! Very exciting! I’m delighted to be looking forward to some wonderful events. And so, my studio is filled with nearly finished paintings waiting for their finishing touches ..and plans for many more to create.

This is a new young wolf painting that has just come off the easel. It is an unusual pose, so I thought it would be a nice challenge. The first scan is the beginning watercolor sepia stage of the piece.

This is the final painting. It is watercolor on board (and traditional miniature, of course). I thought that grasses around him would help to move the eye around the piece, etc., so I put them in last minute.
