Minnesota Safari Club - Live Auction Original Painting

This is the painting that I made at the Minnesota Safari Club State Convention - a Cape Buffalo (my first one! :D ).   This piece was painted on Saturday during the show.  I took a few photos of a number of mounts on display during the VIP preview on Friday night of the show for references. (I didn’t get much too much sleep with last minute preparations and the snowstorm/blizzard that hit the Twin Cities during the show - the painting was finished with the help of numerous cups of coffee. ;)

Thanks to everyone at SCI for their help at the show and for what you do for conservation! :D

Beginning to draw in the darks and definition and the lighter tones into the horns. (11:52 am)

Darks and highlights are defined - just starting to add the background. (1:31 pm)

Blending in some midtones and textures.  (2:03 pm)

(Almost done! :D )  Added more to the backdrop.  Strengthened the highlights and painting in more details. (5:21 pm)

An image of the finished Cape Buffalo painting.  :D (around 6:00 pm)

I haven’t posted in a while, it seems that all of a sudden I have so many requests for new work that I just can’t do anything but paint lately — not a bad thing. I’m really blessed to have so many great opportunities. :)

This is a new African watercolor painting I completed recently, featuring a sunlit black rhino. The painting, titled "Sovereign", is about 8×10 or so. I haven’t painted any African subjects in quite a while so this was a refreshing change. :) I hope to paint more of them — I have had a good response with African subjects so far.

As far as other things on my easels… I’m working on a number of new pieces right now, primarily North American subjects, that I hope to have online soon. I will get some photos of the color phase of a number of them when I can.Rebecca Latham | Wildlife Artist
