This is a new painting of a wolf in progress at the moment. (9×12, miniature done in watercolor.) I liked the expression in his face.

This is a new piece that I just started on a day or so ago, still in the sepia stage of painting in the essence of texture and shapes. It’s a watercolor painting (done in miniature of course
) features a timberwolf and will be 16″ x 20″.
I have been wanting to start a painting of a fur bearing subject in a slightly larger format for a little bit now. …just something about painting large areas of fur and all ot the textures and depth involved…very fun! (I have another wolf piece that is a bit smaller, a 9×12, that I just began working on yesterday for an upcoming deadline as well. …posting that soon as well.)

I was in the mood for some color a few days ago, after painting so many earth tones in my wildlife paintings, so I started on this little piece, which is now nearly complete. This is a smaller miniature, only around 4×6 in, of a young Native American girl in full costume. I loved the glow of light, fine seed beading in her jacket and jewelry, and the satiny feel of her blouse. …and such vivid color!
I used to do a number of portraits here or there when I worked in looser watercolors some time ago. ….and growing up, that was for a time, exclusively what my mother, Karen, did as an artist. More recently I have been drawn to painting them after my mother and I were commissioned by the Butler Institute of American Art to paint portraits for their US Presidents miniatures permanent collection. I’ve found that I love the textures and color that I can work with in a human portrait in watercolor. ….and so far, the smaller size I’ve chosen to format them fits well also (just a little break from solid fur or feathers
).

The Latham Studios Catalog, published earlier this year, is now available to view online. The images in it are available as giclee prints (larger ones on canvas, smaller ones on board). …and of course they are also available for licensing.

This painting was awarded the Robert & Leslie Starke Award for the Best Work By A Young Artist at the International Miniature Art Exhibition in Dunedin, Florida earlier this year. The image is watercolor on ivorine and smaller than 25 sq inches. The painting is of a young Native American woman in full costume for an inter-tribal powwow I had the honor to attend.
