Minnesota Safari Club - Live Auction Original Painting

This is the painting that I made at the Minnesota Safari Club State Convention - a Cape Buffalo (my first one! :D ).   This piece was painted on Saturday during the show.  I took a few photos of a number of mounts on display during the VIP preview on Friday night of the show for references. (I didn’t get much too much sleep with last minute preparations and the snowstorm/blizzard that hit the Twin Cities during the show - the painting was finished with the help of numerous cups of coffee. ;)

Thanks to everyone at SCI for their help at the show and for what you do for conservation! :D

Beginning to draw in the darks and definition and the lighter tones into the horns. (11:52 am)

Darks and highlights are defined - just starting to add the background. (1:31 pm)

Blending in some midtones and textures.  (2:03 pm)

(Almost done! :D )  Added more to the backdrop.  Strengthened the highlights and painting in more details. (5:21 pm)

An image of the finished Cape Buffalo painting.  :D (around 6:00 pm)

Miniature Art Society Exhibit in California

I just sent artwork off to California today for a miniature show. The exhibit is just outside of Yosemite National Park in Mariposa, California - the Northern California Society of Arts in Miniature's "Miniatures in Mariposa" at the Sierra Artists Gallery. The show will be up from late of February to early April. :D I wish I could ship myself off to Yosemite too. ;)

Little Fawn Painting in Progress

Rebecca Latham's miniature fawn watercolor painting in progress.

Here is a photo of the fawn miniature that I am working on right now (see the original pencil sketch in this post).  A collector from Germany was interested in seeing how the painting was coming along, so here it is. :)   This is a close-up photo of the painting - just the fawn.

I will be painting in some grasses and such around the legs and lower areas.  I will be adding a faint suggestive background to the painting also. Rebecca Latham | Wildlife Artist

Miniature Wildflowers - Traditional Miniature

This is a little miniature painting that I have been working on (on and off) for a while.  I just love wildflowers - these are a cluster from here in Minnesota.  I have a little more to do on it, but the photo of the painting should give you an idea of the mood and concept of the miniature.

I thought a miniature format for the painting would be perfect for a little splash of color.  It is very tiny — as you can see by the photo of the painting.  :)  The artwork is 1in x 1/2in.  Rebecca Latham | Wildlife Artist

Snowy Owl Sketch

Rebecca Latham's new Snowy Owl miniature painting. Sketch for the watercolor. This is a new little painting that I'm starting. It is a female snowy owl, so she has some nice black barring and pattern. She also had a little bit of an attitude when I was able to study and photograph her ;) , which I think will look nice in the painting. :D

Landscape in Miniature - Progress

Rebecca Latham's miniature landsacpe painting work-in-progress. ~~ This is a recent image of my miniature landscape painting that I am working on. It still has some more details and textures to be added to it, but the in-progress picture should give you an idea of how the miniature landscape is coming out.

Redtail Hawk Sketch Completed

Rebecca Latham's new redtail hawk sketch for a new miniature painting.

This is the final redtail sketch.  I’ve decided to paint it as a 5×7.  There seems to be a lot of movement and action in this pose of the hawk.  :D Rebecca Latham | Wildlife Artist

Sketch for a Miniature Landscape

LandscapeSketch0107.jpg

This is a little thumbnail sketch for a miniature landscape painting I have started working on. It is a little western landscape (or waterscape emoticon). I took a hike back in the wild areas near Yellowstone National Park & followed this splashing stream for a bit as the sun started to go down. The autumn leaves were just past peak, giving a nice crispy brown color in a few places. I just loved the long shadows and rich color of the landscape.Rebecca Latham | Wildlife Artist
