Butterfly Sketch for Miniature Painting

Queen butterfly drawing/sketch for a new miniature butterfly painting.

This is a graphite sketch/drawing for a new miniature painting I will be starting soon. emoticon  It is a Queen butterfly.  The species is similar to a monarch, but a darker russet color and not as defined with black markings.  I will be sketching out an arrangement of flowers and a background to add to it as well. Thank you. :D

I study butterflies often. In the summertime the butterflies that are native to Minnesota visit the gardens that are just outside my studio windows. I also visit butterfly houses to see them. This one is from a butterfly exhibit at the Minnesota Zoo.

I used this sketch for a painting - adding some wildflowers that I studied in Wyoming (Grand Teton National Park). The painting is posted here - http://www.lathamstudios.com/rebeccasblog/blog/2007/03/30/queen-butterfly-miniature-painting/
