I just started sketching out a cougar, as you can see in the photo. I’ll be painting in the Moose Horn Gallery during our show, so this piece will be the in-progress painting that I will be working on. The cougar in this piece is from a rescue facility for wild animals that were ‘pets’ and were mistreated and/or could no longer be cared for by their owners.![]()

@Joe – Thanks. It takes a lot of practice. I’m sure that if you put the time in you will be just great.
Thanks for stopping by.
@Tosif – Thank you. There isn’t really a ‘trick’ to being good at something…it’s really just a lot of hard work. When I got started, I did something art related every time I had a spare moment…even working late to the early am hours and I could squeeze in on the weekends to make some extra paintings. It was constant, but it also gave me a *lot* of knowledge that I would never have had otherwise.
Now, I work all of the time, too…and keep trying to develop myself as an artist. There are so many great artists, old masters and masters of today (some of which I’ve studied with), that I look up to to grow my technique and methods to create better paintings. But really, I think that having so many things to learn and directions to take your art is what keeps you energized about your own work…you wouldn’t want it to get stale…

It really just comes with practice and observing your subject….being very conscious of all of the subtle changes in line and value. You might find it a little helpful to go to a drawing class…If there is an Atelier or school for classical drawing somewhere near where you live.
