Finished!

Here is the final painting.  All that is left to do is the signature :).

Turtle Painting Progress…

Lots of changes made this time.  Next will be the final details on each turtle and tweaks throughout the painting.

News ……

Latham Studios has been signed by Hadley House!  Earlier this year we were approached by the company and now things have been finalized.  We are excited to be able to share our images with an even larger audience!

Next Phase

Now I have darkened overall and added a bit of warm tones and the beginnings of water detail.  At this stage, the lights are muted but will be brought out again as the painting progresses and the detail is further developed.  The little swimming turtle has been lost for the moment. (I promise to bring him back!)  ;)

Adding the Grey tones

Things really begin to take shape now.  Staying only with a limited color palette, the painting takes on a more 3-dimensional quality.  Many things still have to be addressed, but continued postings will show progress in that direction as well.

Hope you can stick with me on this one!

Shading in sepia

The beginnings of some dark sepia tones being brought out to show dimension.

Sepia sketch transfer on toned board

Here is the turtle sketch transferred in sepia on a toned board.

Sketch of Eastern Painted Turtles for new painting

Here is the beginning of a new turtle painting, approximately 8 x 3 1/2 inches.  It is designed using one of our photo references that Rebecca used for her very well received "Turtle Jam" painting.  This one will require 20 turtles though.  (Can you find them all?)

turtle commission

The foreground water will be much more developed in the painting.

Keep watching…..I plan to have this one done in a couple of months, hopefully much sooner!

Thanks for stopping by….

Finished commission - Ruffed Grouse

Here is the finished Ruffed Grouse commission. I have painted quite a few of these in the last 2 years. This one went to Decoys and Wildlife Gallery in Frenchtown, New Jersey (near New York City). It is the last of 4 paintings for the office of a client. It's a GREAT feeling to be finally done!!

Ringneck Pheasant

Ringneck-Pheasant-KL.jpg One of my larger commissions, this ringneck pheasant was completed as a 24" x 36" painting.  It was a challenge, both with a complexly patterned bird and a detailed background.  I enjoyed painting it, but was happy to be finished!!emoticon
