Rebecca & Bonnie Latham are awarded in the 74th Annual Exhiibition of the Miniature Painters Sculptors & Gravers Society of Washington, D.C. Congratulations!
Bonnie Latham was selected as one of 5 judges to choose the Minnesota Federal Junior Duck stamp this year. (Karen & Rebecca were selected as judges in 2002 & 2003 respectively.) She was accompanied by other judges Scot Storm, Dorothy Hautman, Tom Jes, & Kevin Lines. There were 639 entries by children in grades K-12 participating in the competition. The top 100 entries are given awards with one being selected as 'Best of Show' and represents Minnesota in the national competition in Washington, D.C. The winner of the national competition receives a cash award/scholarship, a trip to Washington, and a Federal Stamp is made of their artwork and sold nationally.
The Federal Junior Duck Stamp program promotes youth awareness of the need for habitats in natural environments and wildlife that live there through the fine arts. Both Rebecca & Bonnie Latham participated in the program in their early years as artists and credit it as one of the reasons they have chosen a career in wildlife art.
If you are or know of a youngster that would be interested in participating in your states' competition, ask your school art teacher or visit the US Fish & Wildlife Service website to locate your state's coordinator for more information.
Karen & Rebecca were invited to be presenters at this year's Young Writers and artists Conference for talented young people interested in the arts held in Fergus Falls, Minnesota . They were able to give a little insight about being children's book illustrators as well as professional wildlife artists and what is involved in working in the arts.
During each 45-55 minute class Rebecca painted a Quick Draw piece from scratch that was finished and given away at the close of each session to one of the students or teachers attending
All three of the Latham artists attended and showed work in this year's NatureWorks Wildlife Art Show & Sale in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Karen & Rebecca painted (& finished) several pieces during the show. Some footage of Rebecca painting a cockatoo miniature and the Lathams' art were featured on the Tulsa evening news to help advertise the show.
We especially enjoy this show because it is a non-profit organization with a volunteer staff passionately dedicated to wildlife and it's habitat. The NatureWorks volunteer staff put on a spectacular show. We give a very special "thank you" to the volunteers and friendly people of the Tulsa area for, once again, making the show an unforgettable event.
Rebecca Latham recently debuted some of her miniature artwork in the Hilliard Society of Miniaturist's annual exhibition in historic Wells, England. Her paintings of a "Water Patrol" Red Fox Kit and "Evening Radiance" Mute Swan were both chosen as best picture by the public, receiving equal votes, and were awarded "Most Popular Exhibit Award" by Mr Lyall Pierson.
The Hilliard Society of Miniaturists was founded in 1982. The Society's annual exhibition showcases around 500 miniature paintings and sculptures by artists from all parts of the world and features works in many mediums, subjects, and styles. The annual show draws miniature art enthusiasts from regional areas of England and abroad.
Karen, Rebecca, & Bonnie Latham debuted a collection of their 1/6th scale miniature paintings at the Miller Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio for the gallery's 14th annual invitational exhibition "Objects of Desire" - a holiday miniature and small works exhibition. The gallery invited the Latham artists specifically to represent traditional miniature artwork which is being featured in the show for the first time. The exhibition of the minute artworks will be on display in the gallery through New Year's Eve.
