Wednesday, 04 October 2006
Bonnie Latham was selected as one of 5 judges to choose the Minnesota Federal Junior Duck stamp this year.  (Karen & Rebecca were selected as judges in 2002 & 2003 respectively.)  She was accompanied by other judges Scot Storm, Dorothy Hautman, Tom Jes, & Kevin Lines.  There were 639 entries by children in grades K-12 participating in the competition.  The top 100 entries are given awards with one being selected as 'Best of Show' and represents Minnesota in the national competition in Washington, D.C.  The winner of the national competition receives a cash award/scholarship, a trip to Washington, and a Federal Stamp is made of their artwork and sold nationally.
The Federal Junior Duck Stamp program promotes youth awareness of the need for habitats in natural environments and wildlife that live there through the fine arts.  Both Rebecca & Bonnie Latham participated in the program in their early years as artists and credit it as one of the reasons they have chosen a career in wildlife art.
If you are or know of a youngster that would be interested in participating in your states' competition, ask your school art teacher or visit the US Fish & Wildlife Service website to locate your state's coordinator for more information.
